Students working at UGArdenOften called “learning by doing,” service-learning courses connect academic concepts learned in the classroom with real needs in the community. Students in service-learning courses are involved in a variety of projects that yield real benefits for community partners, such as conducting community-based research projects, tutoring at-risk children, alleviating hunger, conducting after school programs, and creating economic and community development plans both locally and globally. Through these and many other service-learning projects, instruction is connected to public service and provides opportunities for students to engage with important societal issues in a scholarly way.

The UGA Office of Service-Learning (OSL) supports academic service-learning and community engagement initiatives designed to enhance students’ civic and academic learning, promote engaged research that is responsive to community needs, and contribute to the public good through mutually beneficial community-university partnerships. The OSL reports jointly to the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach and the Vice President for Instruction.
