This month’s employee spotlight is on Josh Hatfield, marketing and graphic design coordinator with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Learn about Josh’s background, some of the latest marketing and graphic design projects in Admissions, and his passion for art. See some of his artwork below!
Q – Can you tell us about your current role and responsibilities with the Office of Admissions? What does your day to day look like?
A – I am the marketing and graphic design coordinator for Undergraduate Admissions, and my day-to-day work includes designing and updating various print and digital promotional materials including infographics, brochures, flyers, magazines, presentations, stickers and more. I collaborate with our internal marketing and communications team on each design, so it’s always a group effort. Some examples of my design work are the Fast Facts brochure and the admitted student graphics. Both are seen by thousands of students and families each year. I was also the graphic designer for the Case Studies brochure and the Strategic Enrollment Management Plan 2024-2028.
Q – What has your career path been like, and what led you to UGA and the Office of Admissions?
A – I earned my BFA in Scientific Illustration from UGA in 2018. Since then, I’ve worked in a biomedical visualization fellowship and in custom framing and art sales jobs. I came back to UGA to work in admissions because, as an alum, I was eager to promote UGA and want to encourage students to apply.
Q – Are you working on any new or upcoming programs/projects that you are excited about?
A – Currently I’m working on redesigning our college-minded workbook, which will be used at various events to educate students about college and what they should do in high school to be prepared to apply. This project has some exciting interactive components, so that is pretty neat. I also recently finished designing the Class of 2029 Early Action Admitted student graphic to accompany Dave Graves’s post on the Admissions Blog as well as the press release. I’m excited about how this turned out.
Q – What do you like to do outside of the office? Are you involved in any organizations around Athens, or do you have any favorite hobbies?
A – Outside of the office, I am always tinkering with art projects, painting, drawing, or working on 3D models. My favorite hobby currently is painting outdoors, I try to do this at least once a week. I’m also involved with AthSketch, an urban sketching group that meets on north campus weekly. Other than art, I also enjoy playing video games with my girlfriend and friends and spending time with my family. I also try to stay active and enjoy swimming, jump rope, hiking, and walking.
Q – And last, do you have any fun facts your coworkers might not know about you?
A –
- One of my paintings has been on display in the Governor’s Mansion for over a year. It’s titled “Soothing Autumn on the Flint River.” It’s there as part of The Art of Georgia Show, but they asked some of us to keep our art until January 2025.
- I really enjoy listening to Philip Glass.
- I lived and worked in the Caribbean prior to Covid in 2020.
- I’ve hauled cattle and wrangled piglets as side jobs!
