Associate Vice President for Instruction

Thomas Mote, Distinguished Research Professor in geography, has been named Associate Vice President of Instruction. He oversees Academic Advising Services, the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Office for Student Success and Achievement, and the Office of Service-Learning, which is administered jointly between the Office of Instruction and the Office of Public Service and Outreach.

He previously served as Special Adviser to the Office of Instruction, where he spearheaded the expansion of the Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP-R) initiative, which focuses on multidisciplinary collaborative research under the supervision of a faculty member. These teams include undergraduate researchers, their faculty mentors, and other scientists such as graduate students, postdoctoral associates, and faculty collaborators. Mote focuses on student success initiatives related to first-year retention and persistence with a particular focus on first-generation, rural, and students facing financial challenges.
